{"id":73,"date":"2020-06-13T22:05:02","date_gmt":"2020-06-13T22:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.knottyweasel.com\/?p=73"},"modified":"2020-06-13T22:56:34","modified_gmt":"2020-06-13T22:56:34","slug":"grainfather-mod-making-a-false-bottom-filter-stay-put","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.knottyweasel.com\/?p=73","title":{"rendered":"Grainfather Mod: making a false bottom filter stay put."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After having watched the excellent David Heath&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dwUptHvFK78\" target=\"_blank\">video <\/a>about adding a false bottom to the Grainfather 30L, I considered it a no-brainer to do the same and bought one from Kegland on Amazon for \u00a326.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s decent enough quality, but I guess due to the way it&#8217;s manufactured, it doesn&#8217;t sit quite flat and I could not get it to reliably sit still when whirlpooling.  Even having practiced with water (again &#8211; thanks David for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tZ7GDsutAsc\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>), I had to be very tentative and I think the different dynamics of hot, sweet wort caused it to pop up and spin when a decent swirl starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I have modified the false bottom to hopefully hold it stably in place even under the most aggressive of whirlpooling!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1351\" height=\"585\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s the mod?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking inspiration from the way the GF seals the grain plates, I figured I could attach some pieces of split silicone pipe to the perimeter of the false bottom plate, which would grip the sides of the vessel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I added a fourth piece after this shot, avoiding the area in red which is where the temperature probe and pump filter are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this layout, it&#8217;s easy to insert and remove the plate by rotating it so the silicone pieces don&#8217;t touch the sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ingredients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Silicone tube<\/strong>: 8mm OD\/6mm ID worked well, ~20cm long<ul><li><em>Originally bought for pumping wort, but the wall thinness renders it annoyingly flimsy for that.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Wire<\/strong>: reasonably strong, bendable wire that fits through the holes in the plate to be used as a &#8220;staple&#8221;<ul><li><em>Stainless steel would be ideal, but I used some copper earth wire I had lying about.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Pliers:<\/strong> for cutting the wire and bending it.<\/li><li><strong>Scissors or craft knife:<\/strong> for cutting the tube.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Using the knife, slit the tube down one side of it&#8217;s length<\/li><li>Cut into 4 equal lengths &#8211; you now have 4 C-sections of silicone<\/li><li>Slip one of these pieces over the edge of the plate where you want to attach it<\/li><li>Determine which holes in the plate you wish to staple through &#8211; you want the staple wire to pass through silicone, plate, silicone.<\/li><li>Cut a wire staple that fits through your chosen holes cleanly with long enough legs for a secure bend on the underside.<\/li><li>Stretching the pipe a bit over the edge between thumb and finger and push the first leg of the staple through silicone, plate, silicone.<\/li><li>Same with second leg<\/li><li>Turn plate over and fold legs over on the underside to secure<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex
